I'm BACK!!!

Did ya miss me? Well, I was on some much need "girl only" time!! Friday night scrappin' was a success of giggles, good food, and girl talk. Then, Saturday, I hit the road for the 3 hour trip to see Michelle (my BFF). We both needed some girl time b/c we had some stress to unload on each other. Isn't that what great friends do? hee-hee! And of course, we scrapbooked some more. I finally got out of my scrappin' creative slump, and I think I came up with an awesome Christmas idea for some family (but I can't tell ya b/c they read!)
Anyway - here are some trip highlights...first, a little background: Michelle and I have this list we made together of 10 things we each want to do that we've never done before...I think it started as 10 things to do in 10 years...but it may excede the 10 year mark. Of course, we don't care...we can change the rules. It is our list, afterall. Well, one of Michelle's items was to ride a roller coaster with me. HA! Fat chance! She is a roller coaster freak, and I hate them!! She finally gave up on the BIG dream and decided this baby coaster would do...ummm, it is a KID coaster and look at face when they took off!! Can you imagine what I would do on a big one? I'd be one of those people you read about having a heart attack!! I never let go of the bar and Jacob (Michelle's kiddo) had to sit with me. He is a little dare devil I might add and kept leaning over the side and making me a nervous wreck!!
Here is much nicer picture of us (although neither one of us likes it! ha!). We took one before church b/c we decided we hadn't taken a dress-up one in a long time. (and yep, her hubs gets tired of taking our picture! ha!)
The rest of the trip consisted of more scrapbooking, running errands, hanging out, and eating - unhealthy as possible - cookie dough (raw and cooked), Mexican food after church, bannana splits (yum), and beans and cornbread (one of my all time favs)...there was more food involved but I can't put into print just how much we truly love to eat!! That would make it real!! ha!
Thanks for a great visit as always Michelle!! (even though you think I side with Chris more than you...how do you think I score all that great deer meat? hee-hee) Love you all!

T.G.I.F.

For SEVERAL reasons I am grateful it's Friday (and really everyday should be Friday for me since I am on summer break...heehee!)

Yesterday was a yuck day. I had my car ready to go and loaded up and went to get in it to meet my work girlfriends for lunch and had a FLAT tire...great! One of my girls did come pick me up and I got to have lunch and see the baby again. He let us go to Chili's and slept the whole time!! Yay! Then, later, Kevin and I got into a big, 'ole nasty fight. urgh ~ we really don't fight often. We will pick at each other, but fighting isn't a very common thing. This one was a yeller! And, we did go to bed mad, but are better this morning.

So....TGIF! The only bad part about today is having to sit at the tire store for awhile to get a new tire. After that, I am rewarding myself with a trip to the scrapbook store! Because tonight is scrapbook night with the girls!!! :-) And then, I am off to see my BFF, Michelle in NW Arkansas for a few days! Yay!

Have great weekends, and I don't wish a flat tire on any of you! ha!

Spur of the Moment Camping Trip

Kevin finished up work early Tuesday and had today off, so we thought, why not hitch up the pop-up, load up the dog and hit the road? Which is exactly what we did ~ much to Jax's dismay! Above is a great picture of our campsite ~ which I thought was awesome! My family and I camp at this park every summer but are usually in different sites. This was the only section open because of all the flooding earlier in the year.
This is probably poor Jax's second and final camping trip ~ a camping dog, he is not! He was miserable. In his defense, he is ten years old and has arthritis. We took him out of his air conditioning and comfortable bed and put him on the hard ground and hot air! heehee! He paid us back with his ferocious gas in the car!! yikes! We got set up in no time and Kevin knocked out some grub. Then, we set off walking around the camp grounds to explore the flooding. It made me really sad to see all the litter washed up from the flood waters and to see so much of the campgrounds not open! We usually have gone camping by now for our big family camp-out every summer. That got cancelled because the sites were closed. My parents and I have reservations for the second weekend in July....but after what we saw last night, those are going to get cancelled too. It was too dark to take pictures, but after all these months, the water is still flooded over the road, some of the campsites are still completely under water, and the ones we have reserved have water all the way up to the tables....sad! :-( I had to see it to really grasp the damage though.
We had a gorgeous view but couldn't get out in the water b/c all the swimming areas are gone b/c of the flood. The water came right up to the decking of our campsite. But, our campsite normally is up on a cliff, so at some point, it just drops off to nothing...not real safe. So...we came, we saw, we relaxed, and now we think up plan B for our July trip!!

Visitors

That's me and Kevin - just visiting churches...searching for one that fits us. And, I feel like we scream visitor when we walk in...you know when everyone kind of looks at you trying to figure out who you are. I hate being uncomfortable - Kevin is great at the small talk, so I stand by quietly soaking it all in and let him do all the talking. Anyway...I have mentioned before this isn't easy, and with his work schedule, we just kind of gave up and kept going to the church I've been going to for the past year or so with my cousin. But, Kevin now only has to work one Sunday a month, and it is time to find a home church.

So...yesterday, we went to visit the church next door to my school. One of my students goes there, and we had gone in December to watch her in the Christmas play. Everyone was really friendly, and it was the size of church we had in mind. Now, remember, we were both raised Baptist in the same church in our hometown ~ that's how we've known each other for so long. But, then I married a preacher's son who no longer believes in the church and Kevin married an Episcopal, and loved the church and felt like he was finally "home". Now we are facing...what are we? Where do we start? I DO NOT WANT TO OFFEND ANYONE with church discussions, I just want to find what is best for me and Kevin. The church I've been attending, I love the preacher - he never looses my attention and that isn't easy. But, it is a Baptist church and if we get right down to it, it doesn't match our beliefs. Kevin and I are both liberal in our beliefs - he probably even more than me. But, we want a church that welcomes ALL people from all walks of life -gay, straight, married, divorced, black or white. We both have gay friends and want them welcome in the church. Right or wrong, we don't think it's our place to judge them.

So, yesterday, we visited a Methodist church. Keep in mind that I have only really ever been to a Baptist church, so it was very different for me. However, there were lots of things I liked. I liked the children's time - they called all the kids down to the front during the service and took about 5 to 10 minutes to talk to them. I liked the minister (is it called a minister in the Methodist church? and it was a women, so does that change it? I have no clue!), but she was good. But, I missed having my little sheet to take notes. If I am active in the message, then I can pay attention better and get more from it. I liked the congregation standing and reciting versus or prayers together. (although, I got confused on what to do next). I didn't really enjoy the music. They had an organ and I know lots of people LOVE the organ, but I thought it was overpowering and all you could hear.

I don't know...this isn't easy. I know we have to give it more than one visit. I also know that not all Baptist churches are the same, so not all Methodist will be the same. I get to pick this go around of visiting and Kevin picks next. Our goal is to visit a month and then try somewhere else until we find the place that we know is it. We know there is no such thing as a perfect church, we aren't perfect either - we just want the church that fits best for us. Surely it is out there - right?

**opinions are welcome on how to find a church or even churches we should visit. However, I am in NO way trying to debate religion or the different denominations.

A Finished Project!!

Remember when Dad left us - it looked like this: almost done!! Kevin and I worked last weekend and this week finishing up. We put the wood slats in the overhang and finished putting up the trim. Then, I caulked the inside and used that foam stuff to keep out all the wasps and bugs. And then, the PAINTING! urgh! Painting a storage building is not as fun as painting a room in your house (not that even that is super fun). But, it's finished...or is it? I'll never tell if the back is painted or not...you'll just have to wonder! LOL!
Whew ~ here's our finished project!!! YAY!!
Oh, and for those who said it looked like I had sand on my hand in the paint picture...the paint color is called Beach House - so how fitting is that? ha!

Book Talk: Case of Lies by Perri O'Shaughnessy

From the book jacket: For Nina Reilly, the mountain town of Lake Tahoe is home. It's where she made a successful career as a tough, resourceful attorney - and raised her tennage son, Bob, alone. Back from a stint in Monterey, where her love life took a tumble, Nina has returned to her Tahoe law office with her old friends Sandy Whitefeather and Sandy's son, Wish. It isn't long before she has a new client whose wife was shot and killed during a casino-district robbery two years before. The police have no suspects, and the robbery victims, three students, lied about their identities and are hiding outside California and the reach of the court.

What I thought: I have read all the books in the Nina Reilly series and usually enjoy them. This was good, but not their best. At times, it was too detailed in character development for one of the robbery victims that was a mathematician. It got WAAAY into describing what math theory he was solving...so into it that I would find myself skimming paragraphs until it was over and back to the good stuff. I was disappointed and would only recommend someone read this if they read the other Nina Reilly books to keep up with some changes. Overall, I give it a solid C (if I were grading it! ha!).

3 Guesses...

3 guesses as to what I have been doing the past two days???

....Yep, painting the storage building! I am currently out of paint, hence the blogging and emailing - ha. I had NO idea it was going to be this much of a pain to paint this building, and it looks good, but at this point, I am thinking I don't care if the back gets painted!!! Seriously, no one can see it - there are woods behind it...so, it probably won't be painted (at least not by me!). This is torture!

More horses and other stuff...

Since Kayce enjoyed Tuesday so much, I took her back to the horse show on Saturday. This time Mom had some kittens that she is trying to find homes for....anyone interested? ha! Anyway - this kept Kayce busy with a mission all day! She made a sign and walked the arena with it (I paid her $2 to do it - I didn't think she would! ha!). She tried hard and managed to find a home for one. As she was walking around the arena, when she passed people, you could see the kids read the sign, turn to the parent, and then the parent shaking their heads NO! hee-hee!

You have to admit kittens are cute - even you none cat folks! This one was my favorite...but my cats wouldn't like it if I brought another one home. Plus, TWO is plenty!! I love 'em, but I hate that litter box!

Autumn got several ribbons this week - she got first place in the flag race against the teenagers too! Yay Cowgirl! She is really a natural with the horses...just like her grandma!
This is her on Dolly:

Other random stuff:

Sunday and today, Kevin and I worked on finishing up the storage building. Whew - that was W.O.R.K! I admit that I didn't think we could do it by ourselves b/c we aren't power tool/handymen kind of people, but we did it! We put the finishing touches on the underhang of the roof and all the trim up. I'll take an "after" picture once I paint it this week!! Tomorrow, I am being a girl for the day and getting my hair cut and highlighted, so no manual yucky labor for me!! :-)

Also, I went to work with Kevin today and helped him with his caterings. I made the decision that I am NOT working this summer, BUT I will help him when he is in a bind like today. And it was fun and neat to see him in what he does everyday. I had no idea his day was so hectic and fast paced! Wow! I do have a whole new respect for him after today...I came home and sleep for 3 hours! ha!

**I am playing around with my sidebar trying to make updates...for some reason, Tasha, I cannot get the link to work to your blog. It keeps sending me to some weird site. I am giving up for tonight and will try again tomorrow! :-)

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Dad's Day...to the Dad who took me in and raised me as his own...(love that hair! hee-hee)
Look how it's changed over the years:
Happy Dad's Day to the Dad who added onto to my deck for me!

and...two years later, came back and built me a killer shed!

How do you thank an awesome and handyman Dad like that? Well, a gift card to Harbor Freight Tools, of course! And you only wish you had more money to throw his way!! :-)

Love ya Dad!

What 'cha think?

My man apparently can't handle me sleeping in past him - hee!hee! So, yesterday, he offers me a job. hmmm? What do you think? Should I sling burritos with him and help with caterings being delivered this summer? I mean, it's only for 8 weeks and only 2 days a week....it would give me something to do...or should I be lazy and stick to my to-do list at a leisurely pace??? Decisions....I think maybe IF he sticks to the promise of only 2 days a week, and we ride in together where I don't have to pay for gas! I am going to deliver a catering with him later today to see what it's all about.

(oh, and for those who are confused by the burritos - he works for a 'build your own burrito' restaurant right now as the catering manager. The BBQ is his catering on the side that will eventually, hopefully be our full-time business.)

Now ... do you see me as a burrito girl? HA!

Book Review: Lifeguard by James Patterson & Andrew Gross

**My next read for the year towards my New Year's Resolution and trying to make my pile of "to read" books go way down! :-)

From the book jacket: Working as a lifeguard at a Florida resort, Ned Kelly meets a woman he is wild about, the woman of his dreams. It feels perfect in every way - except that she prefers caviar and Manolo Blahniks, and he is used to burgers and flip-flops. She is a guest at the luxurious hotel - he lives above a garage.
So when Ned's cousin offers to cut him in on a rich deal he's been commissioned to execute, Ned can't turn him down. The plan is simple, just a fast break-and-enter. The risk is high, and the reward is even greater - $5 million. But on the night of the heist, something goes devastatingly wrong.

Ned walks away from his job, his town, and the woman he's fallen in love with. Runs away, actually, knowing that only velocity and secrecy can save his life. But who is pursuing him? The FBI? Whoever sabotaged the heist? Or is it all somehow tied into his new love - and his oldest enemies?

What I thought: Wow! I finished this book last night and don't know how I missed it when it first came out (2005). It is the best James Patterson book I have read in awhile. I never even had an idea how it would turn out. Yesterday, I couldn't put it down!! I loved it!! The pace never let up and there were turns and unexpected everywhere...it would make a great movie. I highly recommend it if you haven't already read it!

It's been awhile, so why not?

It's a tag you're it! :-)
The rules are as follows:
1. Post the rules!
2. Answer the questions about yourself
3. At the end of the post, list 5-6 people you would like to tag and leave a comment on their blog letting them know.
4. Let the person who tagged you know that you posted your answers.

So here goes....

1. What were you doing 10 years ago? I was 25, married, buying my first house, Jax was a puppy, and I was in my first year of teaching!! Life was very different 10 years ago...makes me wonder where I'll be 10 years from now...

2. What are 5 things on your to-do list today? finish the laundry (urgh), mow the backyard, weedeat the backyard and front yard, finish the last of the catering clean-up, and READ some of my book.

3. What are some snacks you enjoy? anything chocolate (of course), I love peanut M&M's, and those new 100 calories snacks, and bean dip with fritos (yum)

4. What would you do if you were a billionaire? I would definately have lots of land and move my Momma closer. Then I could rescue abused horses with her help as well as fostering boxers. My family and close friends would be well taken care of and local animal shelters wouldn't want for anything!! I would buy one of those big RV's and Kevin and I would travel whenever the urge hit!

5. What are three of your bad habits? I worry too much. I have a hard time saying no to people when sometimes I should and it adds stress to my life instead of making life easier. I have to have a clean house or I can't sit down and relax.

6. What are 5 places you have lived?
Piggott, AR (no jokes -heehee)
Newport, AR
Fayetteville, AR
Little Rock, AR
and where I live now

7. What are 5 jobs you have had?

teacher

8. What is currently playing on your IPOD? Ummm... I don't have an IPOD. Is it bad that I don't even really want one?

9. What are the last 5-6 books you have read? The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, 7th Heaven by James Patterson, Dear John by Nicholas Sparks, Marley and Me by ??, and I am reading Lifeguard by James Patterson now.

10. Who do you want to tag?Anyone who wants to join in!I would LOVE to see your answers! Let me know if you do it :)

How I spent my first day off...

I know ~ you are shocked ~ it was at a horse show! ha! But, I missed the last two because of our caterings. This one yesterday wasn't with the group she is regularly with. Yesterday was with the 4-H club. It was a little different ~ a lot more strict (riders were automatically disqualified if their shirt was untucked or sleeves rolled up) and by the book.
One of the "challenges" ~ not sure of the exact name ~ there were obstacles they had to get the horse to do stuff like walk backwards between two boards, walk over a plank, step over boards, and of course, check the mail!
I took our cousin, Kayce, for a girls day. She NEVER got bored. We left the house at 8am and got home after 8pm. NOT one complaint and wasn't ready to leave!! The child wants to pet the horses and ride so bad she can't stand it! ha! That is her getting the horses water above ~ those horses didn't want for water all day!! She would even dump it out if a bug got in it so it would be fresh for them! ha! We had a great day of eating junk at the concession stand, horses, snow cones (love 'em), and fast food on the way home with a stop at Bath and Body Works...A great girls day! She asked so many questions all day and was really soaking in her horse knowledge. She's ready for the next horse show! :-) How do you like Autumn's new show shirt? I love it!

It's official!

Summer break is here! Today was 1/2 day teacher workday, and we went out with a bang...or a burst. ha! The girl that teaches across the hall from me that is pregnant - her water broke after an hour there. Hubs came and rushed her to the hospital, and I expect a call any time that baby is here! (That's one way to get out of a boring in-service video they were making us watch! ha!)

BBQ Weekend

We did it!! It's over and today is rest and try to clean up day. My little kitchen just wasn't made to cater to 500 people out of - ha! We got up Saturday at 4 am and started getting the last of the stuff ready. It was hard work, and we had a steady line for several straight hours. But, Kevin and I make a great team at this (home improvement projects are a whole other story! hee-hee). Kevin, of course, is too hard on himself and doesn't think the BBQ was that great. He always says he could've done better...If it wasn't then please tell me WHY when they made an announcement on the intercom at the end of the day that we were having a "fire sale" and selling boston butts right off the grill, that he sold out in 2 min??? Do people come running for 'it was ok bbq'?? NO! One of these days, he will take his compliments! ha! We were seriously so busy that these were the only pictures I got. By the time we were finished, every muscle in my body was aching!!! But, I still have the catering bug! I love it! And, he was able to give out several of his cards and got another definite event booked from this - so yay!
Now - I have to go read some blogs and then get back to cleaning that kitchen...I should've taken a picture of that so you could appreciate the MESS - and the garage, and even the driveway where the smoker was parked all week! The neighbors have to be thrilled the smoker isn't sitting in the driveway anymore, but they all seemed to love the smell of the BBQ smoking! Kevin says it's the best cologne if he could bottle it! LOL!

Book Review: 7th Heaven by James Patterson

**4th book for my New Year's Resolution (I am not doing as good as I wanted but will read ALL summer ~ yay!)

From the book jacket:
California' "Boy with a Broken Heart," the teenage son of a recent governor, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Michael Campion, born with an incurable heart defect, has grown up under the watchful eye of an adoring public. The pressure on detective Lindsay Boxer to learn what happened to Michael is overwhelming. When she finally does get a lead, it's devastating - and for Assistant District Attorney Yuki Castellano it lead to the biggest trial of her life.

While working on the Campion case, Lindsay and her partner, Rich Conklin, also try to catch whoever is setting fire to some of the most beautiful homes in San Francisco, leaving their owners to perish in the flames. Lindsay enlists her friends in the Women's Murder Club to help her find the arsonist - and suddenly the fires start raging much too close to home.

What I thought:
This is the 7th book in the Women's Murder Club series that James Patterson has out and now has the TV show based on. James Patterson rarely disappoints and didn't this time either...several plots going at once, but you don't get lost. The ending I didn't see coming and I always like that. It says a lot that with all I had going this week with closing out school and the BBQ catering, that I started and finished a book - goes to show that I couldn't put it down. Everyday I give my kids 15 to 20 minutes of DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read), and I took my book to school and read with them. They love it when I do that! :-)

Closing up shop

Tomorrow is the last day ~ today was the last day for several of my kids. I almost cried twice today so we will see how tomorrow goes.

I actually got end of the year gifts today!! I have never gotten end of the year gifts, so I certainly wasn't expecting it. Wow! Nice ones too - more gift cards (love 'em!!), homemade bread (yum), a bracelet, a pretty ring with my initial, candles...wow! I don't even know what to say!! The cards from the parents and kids thanking me for one of their best school years was by far the BEST part!!

Oh, and we got the test results back from the benchmark today, and the kids ROCKED!!! The 3rd grade scores were up from last years 3rd graders (yay), they were higher than the state average (yay), the district average (yes), and the region average (hee-hee). They ROCKED!!

I will share more later...gotta go think about BBQ!

Random Things...

  • As of today, I have 3 days of school with my kids left. Today was originally the last day, (snow and tornado make-up's rest of week) and several of my kids may not come back after today. :-(
  • My kiddo that was taken out of the home came back this week!! I was so worried that I wouldn't get to see her. When I gave her the scrapbook I made each one of them, she hugged hers and said, "I"m going to keep this forever!"
  • I lost the laundry war between me & Kevin. I asked him two weeks ago to sort his laundry, and I would wash his clothes. I was swamped with other stuff and this is how he could help me. He never sorted. I never did the laundry. I thought it was a simply request. I dug in my heels. Well, now he is the one that is swamped and has no clean undies...hee-hee! I am a sucker and sorted his darn laundry last night and got it started. But next time....
  • I started a new James Patterson book - finally! I am going to read, read, read all summer!
  • Have I mentioned 3 school days left?
  • Oh, and on Saturday, our BBQ catering has gone from 500 folks to 700!!! yikes! Anybody wanna come sling BBQ?

Hot Topics...

To tell or not to tell? This question, for some reason, has come up a few times in the past few weeks in girl talk conversations...if you know one of your friend's husbands is cheating, do you tell her? Do you keep your mouth shut? Does it depend on the friend? Does it depend on if it is hearsay or if you actually see it with your own eyes? Hmmmm....you may think you have the answer, but until you are actually faced with the situation, do you really know what you would do?
I would like to say to all my girlfriends "oh, I would tell you." But, really, I don't think that's the case...if it is a close friend (a BFF of sorts) then yep, I am telling you. I am not happy about it, but I'm telling you. Because I think you would do the same for me (right, Michelle? Peggy? Sandy?). You would be surprised at who will keep the cheating spouses secrets and their motives for keeping the secret. My ex had an affair or two or three...who really knows? I found out after the divorce that there was at least one for sure the last two years we were married. There were people who knew that I thought I could trust...they have their reasons for not ratting him out, and I totally get that. You have to deal with the fact that the person may not believe you and you have ruined a friendship. The husband or cheating spouse WILL lie to cover their tracks and try to get out of it. (I know this one first hand.) If your friend believes them over you, then you have lost a friendship. Which is why I think it depends on the level of your friendship...what do you think?
It's not an easy situation...here's a tougher question - why has cheating become such common place? Is nothing sacred anymore? It seems that everywhere you look, someone is cheating on someone else. If you are that unhappy that you would inflict that much pain on someone you supposedly love, then why not just get divorced? Divorce hurts, but what hurt much worse was dealing with the affairs and other women...the things that go through your mind, the depression, the questions...it is the worst thing I've ever gone through. WHY would someone make a choice to inflict that kind of pain on someone they love? It doesn't make sense to me and didn't even before I was the "victim" of a cheating spouse. This is a topic that I've always been able to get on my 'soap box' about and can get me riled up b/c I just don't get it! I could go on and on...but I will spare you my lectures on cheating and being faithful...just know this - if you are so unhappy in a relationship that you feel the need to cheat, be decent and just walk away from your current relationship first. It may be painful, but not nearly as painful as what you are about to do.
Bringing me back to the original point - knowing what kind of pain you would start in your friend's life - do you tell or not? In what circumstances do you tell? Would you want to know? It's not fun being the one that doesn't know while everyone else does... but someone has to have the guts to let the cat out of the bag...would you be that person?

**disclaimer: do not read this and think Kevin has cheated - ha! For whatever reason this has seriously been a discussion at least twice in the past two weeks among girlfriends. I just wondered what some of your opinions were! :-)

Busy, but good weekend

You know the weekend started with a girls night of scrapbookin'. There really is no better way to start a weekend! ha! It was a small group this time - just me, Laura & Laura (I gotta come up with nicknames - actually one of them I call funny girl - she's a hoot). But anyway, my friend Donna came for a bit too - remember the one that had the twins back in January. Her Mom is still here, so her and her Mom tried to bring the girls and get some scrappin' done. The twins were havin' none of it! ha! Seriously, I don't know how she keeps up with two of them. I freak out when ONE baby is crying and there were two of them going at it! yikes! Poor Kevin thinks he is cursed b/c they both started after or as he was holding them! hee-hee! So, poor Donna didn't get to stay long or get much done. BUT, she looks GREAT! (and somehow, I let them get away without taking a picture - I am slacking)
Saturday was spent getting ready for Kevin's catering job on Sunday and also getting some yard work done....the yard was a jungle! We catered for 50 Game and Fish folks (aka directors) at Lake Sylvia today. It was great...I really do love this catering stuff...you know I love to organize & there is alot to organize! ha!
Here is where we were:
It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere but gorgeous! Kevin cooked ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, baked potato salad, slaw, and almost Texas toast! We were going to have Texas toast but right after everyone got there, a huge storm hit and the power went out. We just kept on trucking...and pulled it off - except for the toast. yay!
Well, I am tired and MY ribs are about done...so until tomorrow...bye!
